Clarifying the Uyunkar's case

Dear Friends,

Warm greetings from Manitoulin Island, that the warm days of spring bring you new energy and new hope for the future.

I want to tell you all that after the court hearing, the sacred medicines Natem (Ayahuasca) and Tobacco came out clean in the end.

The judge spoke clearly saying that these medicines are sacred and have been used for thousands of years, that we use them in a ceremonial and religious manner.

He also acknowledged that my son and I were invited here and we only came to help with no intention to harm anyone. He told the court that many people had obviously benefited from the use of the medicine, and the letters we presented came from all sorts of people all over the world. He was clearly impressed. The federal prosecutor even acknowledged that although a law was broken, it was done without intent.

My son Edgar has gone home to Ecuador. He was given a sentence of one day in jail, which was waived for time served. The judge acknowledged the time we have spent here waiting. Even though I must stay here now for another year to serve a sentence of service to the community,

I am content that the medicine came out totally clean. This is what I wanted. This year I must do 150 hours of community service, but I can accomplish this in a little over a month, and then I will continue to work on my other projects.

The CD that my son and I recorded is out now and for sale ($20 Can. or $15 US plus postage: 3$) If you want one, send me an e-mail.

Also, the film of my talk on Shuar cosmovision is done, and we're waiting for copies to be made to sell. Another documentary has also come out about my time here in Canada. In a month or two I plan to write in the press about the use of the medicine. So some things have been accomplished in this long time in Canada.

Now I want to concentrate on recording a CD of ceremonial music and begin to write a book about the medicine and the culture.

I must tell you all just how important all the letters were. These letters were bound into a book and given to the judge, and they are actually what won this case. The judge was so impressed and he read many of them out loud. I would like to publish them. You all who wrote are the real warriors of the medicine, in the defense of the life of our fellows. You are all very important people who will live eternally in my heart.

The spirit guardians and protectors are happy. This is a part of the fight. He have climbed up one level. Now we will start a second round of fighting. We have to change mankind, but with love, with humility, kindness, service and sharing, for the society and to the youth. We must fight against the incurable illnesses that are going to come. The only thing that will save us is natural medicine.

I hope to share my knowledge with all of you, and to learn your knowledge. We need to unite ourselves to make the medicine more powerful and bring it to society, this thing which is so good for the health of mankind.

Amazonia holds the most pure and traditional secrets for the health of mankind. This we must all use for a benefit; not for the profit of one person only, but for the good of all. So I want to thank you all immensely for your letters and your willingness to put yourselves in the fight to defend the medicine. Thank you so much.

I will be here for the next year, so please call me, write me, visit me. I want to connect with all of you, and keep working together.

May the light of the Great Spirit always illuminate your path and that of your family. With lots of love,

Juan Uyunkar
